i guess its a matter of perspective...

e.g. "I hope to get an A on the upcoming test." (prolly wont happen if u dont study enough i.e. take action, the necessary steps)

as opposed to

"I am determined to get an A on the upcoming test." (implies you will work for it and are bound by hook or crook to get it)

so my point all along has been that determination is based on self and active/ dynamic power, where as hope is more benign, passive, waiting for something that may or may not happen... i don't put these two things in the same basket. Wishful thinking and positive action (in my mind) are different beasts is my thinking.
