Re: Chasing Echos

There were a couple things I didn't understand...

Why couldn't people see the creature? I understand that its body is blue, but that can't mean it is completely invisible? Could it perhaps camouflage itself like a chameleon?

What exactly was ETD's plan with Loki? They were going to recreate the sound the creature made (to the best of their ability) and then what? All I could figure was they were going to use the recreated sound to pinpoint the creature and drop the giant robot onto the creature, presumably to fight it? I don't understand how recreating the sound was going to help them find the creature. Also, if the creature is so big, why don't they just send another rocket up and then send up Loki to the location where the first rocket exploded?

To me, the whole robot idea seems pretty far fetched. Why didn't the people in your story just try to shoot the creature out of the sky? Was there something that prevented them from doing that? If so, what?

Another big problem I had with the story is the main character's actions/hostility toward his coworkers and the police. It just seemed unwarranted. Why was he so angry in the first place? Everyone else was working just as hard as him, so what gave him the right to stand on a pedestal and denounce everyone?

How is that they were able to see the creature when they flew close to it? We can see things far beyond the ionosphere. So why would the creature being 44 miles away from earth make it invisible?

Why in the world did they grant Major rank to the main character? He's not even in the military!

Also, how is that the main character's job is both to analyze the creature's sound data and build a giant robot? He also mentions that he doesn't really trust the designers. Why not? Did he help design the thing? You mention that he created it, so does that mean he is the lead designer or did he just help out in the construction? If not, why does he have any authority over the robot in the first place?

My final complaint with the story is that there's no resolution. They never discover the intentions of the creature, and the fate of America, let alone the world, is never revealed. Oh, and it seems like the main character is resigned to die at the end? What's up with that?
