*I wanted to pay respect and tribute to our brave young people who suffer agonsing illness and come to terms with a loss yet to happen and as I have seen, soak it all up for their parents and loved ones...all on their own. .stoic doesn't come close. This was for a girl I knew, and anyone reading if it can be a comfort - it comes from some of her thoughts.


Pink frills glistened as I tapped with my big toe
the water pools cradling a seashell filling to the brim
before filling my shoes, my small footprints in the sand.

I listened to her calling my ear with the ocean’s tune,
Keen to hear, I sat cross-legged and let the ripple of the sand
stick to me and warm my gritty bottom.

‘Hush, hush, hush,’

But there was no tune
No small pretty voice
To match her gown
Instead my seashell
With lines of time
She frowned at me
As I peered into her eyes
And I shook her.

Drip, drip, drip.

But its just seawater
Or are they her tears
They spoil her pretty gown
I cradled her
I smoothed her worried lines
She smiled at me
My nose crinkled. Why?
And I listened

‘Hush… hush… hush,
Tomorrow when you die
Come back to the seashore
The seashore in the sky
Where the sun will keep you warm
The wind will dry your tears of cry
Ice creams are yours those billowing clouds
And your sandcastles in the sky.’


Rush…rush…rush
Rush home and pack your things,
Begin your journey here
Tomorrow when you holiday
We will catch your saddened tear
Till someone who loves you passes by
and you speak and they sit down to hear.’


I kissed my mum and dad, and grabbed my bucket and spade
inside I didn’t feel sad, their tears I knew would someday be happy
again when they came to the seashore to pick me up.

I don't know what else to say. Simply, incredibly beautiful.

I've been here too many times these past two years myself. You think I'd start to get numb to it after a while, but I don't.

I wept...

Once, I knew a little girl, just like this...and once, she left too, to her seashore in sky, peacefully and without much noise, leaving us in tears, until we meet again. She was twelve.
So I understand this deeply and yes, I too wept reading, for Annie who I didn’t know and for Maria, who I did know, and for all other children who visit these plains too shortly, like passing angels, touching us only briefly with their wings...and yet, they leave deep marks in our hearts and minds.
My condolences, Lubesh, for your lost, and my condolences to her family...
But thank you for finding strength to write this and make us remember all the children who left too soon, all the angels who only visited this place...
