Re: If I Die
I loved it, simply for the fact of the child asking so many questions. I have a niece who is 2 and a half and has discovered the word "Why?". When my husband asks her to do something, she will ask "Why?" in her cute little whiney voice. This touched on that memory perfectly, excellent job.

Yes Ryankia, this poem captures the moment when the concept of 'death' is still very primitive in my youngest daughter's mind, as is the case for any child. This is why religious indoctrination of children must be viewed as a bad phenomenon and resisted whenever possible, as idealist ideas are being spoon-fed to uncritical minds. That must be seen as sad. The most intellectual of discussions about indoctrination of children by way of religious values is to be found in the writing of the late E.P.Thompson, especially his masterpiece 'The Making of the English Working Class'. Re: If I Die
That was worth reading. It captured, with its playful rhyme, childhood. The parental response was perfect. Very Shel Silverstein (one of my favorites no matter how much I read).

Re: If I Die
Ah... This is sad, and cute... It sort of makes me think of the great little things in life that make life worth living - like putting my feet in the stream, lloking at teh falls, reading a bood, laughing with my friends... lol...

Re: If I Die
Lol, wow funny and sad, a child thinking about death already. But still interesting and a good poem none the less, good use of character voice, even if it was a real situation.

Re: If I Die
The curiosity of a child well depicted here. Still getting comments over a year after posting means that this has really struck a chord with some people. It doesn't really seem to have a flowing rhythm but the point of poignant to the point where it is mostly overlooked. Not bad.

Hello 'Syrah' and thank you for commenting. You are correct I would suggest in saying the poem has no obvious metre or rhythm, but it was set out like a poem really, above all to capture the innocence and emotion I have to say of the moment. One second you are tucking your child into bed, the next, you are both engaged in a discussion about death and dying. Colin
