what have you

You have to focus on an idea, and the rest will come to you. That’s what my teacher said of writing. Whether or not its true, I suppose, is up for debate. My teacher is a good teacher, I think, but me not being a teacher myself, there’s really no way for me to know. His name’s Karl. Like Karl Marx, the comedian or whatever. He’s not very funny though, although occasionally he’ll say something that will get the whole class snickering. He’ll say something like, “If you sit down to write with the intention of creating a piece of masterwork, you’ll most likely create a piece of something else.” A few girls in the front will giggle. Sure, I might even crack a smile. But he’s not funny, really. I swear.

So I like to add things to the end of sentences, like “I swear”, to make my writing sound more stylized. Or something to that effect. My teacher says it’s tacky and that real writers don’t need to use autistic wordplay to make a piece of prose interesting. When he used the word autistic, I said to him “Hey, are you calling me retarded?” to which he responded “No, I mean autistic in the sense that you are using ‘I swear’ because you desire to, not that you think it’s a good thing to write.” He’ll say stuff like that and downright confuse me. “What is good writing and what isn’t?” I’ll ask him. That is one question that always produces the exact same response, like he’s practiced saying it over and over again in his office. The response is “That, my aspiring student, is something no one can say for sure.”

Re: what have you

This reads a little like a blog post. I'm not sure if you intended to do something concrete with this or whether you're just sort of experimenting with an SoC form of writing.

To some extent, it does read like a complete piece of work. For example, the starting sentence and the finishing sentence are a classic way to start or finish a piece of prose. I mean that it's a more or less typical way of starting and a typical way of conclusion as well.

Your style of writing, in this particular piece anyway, seems to be very casual... yet again, I don't quite know what to make of it. This could perhaps be a part of a bigger project you're working on, in which case, perhaps the tone would fit right in, but as of now, it really just feels like a page out of someone's journal.

Also, I noticed a very distinct lack of emotion, more or less, throughout the piece. You've just presented a bunch of thoughts and a little bit of dialogue as well. I don't quite know what to make of it except to say that it probably doesn't make for a very good story, and perhaps it's really not meant to be story-like, in which case, once again, we come back to the same thing... I don't quite get what you wrote this for. It's written well, of course, there're no flaws that I could pick up on right away, but I don't see your purpose of writing this in the big scheme of things.

Re: what have you

Sounds like you just sat down and wrote whatever came to your mind first, perhaps right after a class or discussion? I like it, but not sure where the inspiration may have exactly come from of where this could be taken haha.

The Stream of (Un)Consciousness. Awe. How I like thee. I can't tell if this was taken from your life or not, and that's saying a lot if you think about it.

My teacher was a dumbass. This teacher, in the piece, sounds like something I would have preferred. He sounds pretty cool, in a weird strange queer state.

Don't know what else to say, I'm not very good at Gurditting .

Thumbs up Re: what have you

I don’t know what it is, but I APPLAUD BRILLIANCE when I read it.

Just one thing to be nit picky...The comma outside of ‘swear,’ it should be inside the quotation marks here...I swear, to maky my writing sound more stylized.

Re: what have you

I like the way Peppy put it; stream of unconciousness. ^_^ I love the narrator's voice; great to laugh at and along with as we all struggle to grasp what it really means to write well. Clever and very well done. Kudos. ^_^

Re: what have you

Nice deep question right there, Ambrose. What is good writing...and what isn't. Do you read a book you like and, when you finish, say, "That's good writing."? What if I read the same book and decided that every aspect of it sucked balls.

Is a question like, "Why is water wet?" Who the hell knows, it's a matter of opinion I suppose, and you know what they say about opinions...

Nicely written and and interesting way to adress the question.

Re: what have you

Wow, I didn't realize this was receiving so much attention. Thanks for the comments guys! I'm actually not the narrator here. I've yet to take a class dedicated solely to writing, although next semester I may get to take a creative writing class. Right now I'm on a waiting list and English majors get first priority *crosses fingers*.
