Wizard Investigations 1 of 2 (Harry Potter Universe)
Based on: The Harry Potter Universe...Loosely
SYNOPSIS: A PI is hired by her old teacher to investigate a set of murders. Oh, and the PI happens to be a wizard. Just saying.
ACT 1
EXT.SUBURBAN HOUSE – DAY
We fade in to an ESTABLISHING SHOT of a suburban house. It is quiet and peaceful. We close in on the door of the house, and see DON pull out a wand.
DON
Alohamora
The door opens.
INT.SUBURBAN HOUSE – DAY
Don is a tall and lanky boy with a wide smile. He walks into the room, followed from behind by ALEXIS. Alexis is quieter than Don, and more thoughtful. They walk through the main hallway, into the living room. Don seems quite at ease, but Alexis can’t help but seem worried.
ALEXIS
Don…are you sure the muggles who live here aren’t going to pull Christmas with the Kranks?
DON
They’re on their way to London and we have the entire house to ourselves for a week. What are you so scared about?
Alexis turns on Don angrily.
ALEXIS
This…this isn’t fear this is common sense. I’m getting bad idea vibes, or maybe they’re guilty vibes, but either way this is wrong.
Don raises his hands defensively.
DON
Whoa. Alexis…they’re just muggles.
Alexis gives Don a horrified look, but is quickly distracted by a noise to her left. They both turn to find MR. SALEM, an older man, standing with a baseball bat at the ready, and a little girl by his leg.
MR. SALEM
What the hell are you doing in my house.
Alexis is rendered speechless, and looks to Don who whips out his wand.
DON
Avada Kedavra.
We fade to Green and then…
INT.APARTMENT – MORNING
Alexis wakes up with a jolt. She’s sweaty and breathing heavy, and looks much older, more mature, than in her dream.
ALEXIS (VO)
It was just a dream. That’s what I keep telling myself although I know it wasn’t. It happened. I was there, 3 years ago, and I couldn’t stop it. Now I pay for it every night in my dreams. My nightmares. My burden.
She gets up and puts a robe on. She brushes her teeth, makes breakfast, gets dressed, examines herself in the mirror, does push ups, all while she continues to talk in Voice Over.
ALEXIS (VO)
I should have known better. I should have used common sense. But when your boyfriend offers you a week’s vacation, just the two of you, who would say no. Maybe I was just being racist like him. They were just muggles. And I was a wizard. Was being the term of choice. Haven’t used a wand since the incident. Might never use one again.
She leaves her apartment, passing by her neigbours in the hall way, entering the lobby for her building, and leaves out onto the street.
EXT.STREET - MORNING
ALEXIS (VO)
You’re probably saying “If wizards exist, I think I would have noticed.” Well welcome to Canada. While the rest of the world has their own wizarding communities, we got nothing. You ever see the show Highlander, where an immortal can enter a room and every other immortal in that room suddenly gets a tingly feeling in their nether regions? Yeah we don’t have that. Wizards up here all live like muggles, never using their powers in front of other people, or act in anyway abnormal. For all I know, my neighbor could be a wizard. It’s not like anyone would ever pull out their wand to a complete stranger. The only other wizards I know are the select few I shared a class with in university. And our professor.
EXT.OFFICE – MORNING
Detective JOHN Winters is sitting at the door to her office, holding a bouquet of roses. He notices her coming, and gets up to meet her.
ALEXIS (VO)
I hope those aren’t for me.
John gestures the flowers towards her.
JOHN
These are for you.
Alexis looks at them as if she’d never seen flowers before.
ALEXIS
Detective.
JOHN
These are…um, for helping us with that drug bust. I wanted to thank you…for that. The help.
ALEXIS (VO)
Oh yeah, and by the way. I’m a private investigator.
ALEXIS
So you sold the pot, and used the money to buy me flowers? That’s so sweet.
JOHN
I really can’t tell whether you’re joking, or being serious.
ALEXIS
Or maybe these flowers are a futile attempt by you to ask me on a date.
John is definitely taken aback.
JOHN
Just take them.
He drops them in her hands, where she holds them as far away from her as possible.
ALEXIS
I shouldn’t have these, really. I’ll just kill them.
JOHN
Well that’s the thing about flowers. You can always buy more.
ALEXIS (VO)
Yay…
ALEXIS
Well…you’re welcome.
JOHN
…Okay. See you around.
He starts to head back to his car, then turns around.
JOHN
Maybe for lunch…sometime…maybe?
ALEXIS (VO)
Not a chance.
ALEXIS
Sure.
Alexis heads into her office. Hanging up her coat, pocketing her keys, dropping the flowers into the garbage.
ALEXIS (VO)
So how does a pretty girl like me get to be a Private Investigator? Apparently taking down your homicidal boyfriend is something the police department really approves of. They offered me all kinds of recommendations for criminology courses, and as soon as I was out they offered me a cushy job at the precinct. But I’ve never been much for uniforms, so I decided to go private instead. They put in a kind word on my behalf, and I had my license within a week. Now I’m solving crimes, and helping…clients.
As she says that last word, she spots her old Professor, TRUMMER, sitting in a chair in her office.
ALEXIS
Professor…
TRUMMER
You might want to sit down.
ALEXIS
How about I just save us some time. No.
TRUMMER
You don’t even know what I’m going to…
ALEXIS
But I know I won’t like it, so you might as well leave right now.
Sits down.
TRUMMER
Give it up, Alexis. You can’t just blame a race of people over one man’s mistake.
ALEXIS
One man’s mistake? Killing a family of people is a mistake? And you wonder why I won’t listen to what I have to say?
TRUMMER
Yes I do. To abandon your own people like this is irrational.
ALEXIS
My own people? You say that like there’s some war going on? But it’s weird, I don’t see any muggles killing wizards.
TRUMMER
For all I’ve done for you, don’t you think I deserve a little more respect? Muggle’s might not be killing us, but somebody is.
ALEXIS
What do you mean?
TRUMMER
I’m talking about Murders. 3 wizards are dead. Friends of mine, teachers at the University. The cops aren’t getting anywhere, not that I’d expect them to. Whoever can kill these wizards would make short work of any police force. That’s why I need you.
ALEXIS
No, what you need is an Auror.
TRUMMER
I’ve tried contacting Britain, but there’s been no answer. Not from the Ministry, not even from Dumbledore. And none of us know anything about investigation. You took the classes, you know more about this than we do. And you also know our world. More than any muggle. You’re the only one suited for this job.
ALEXIS
I’m finally free of magic, and wizards, and you want me to go back?
Trummer leans forward.
TRUMMER
You’ll take this case. You were going to since you walked in that door.
ALEXIS
How will I get paid?
TRUMMER
You’re not taking this case for the money. Murder is murder, no matter who it’s done to. You’re not going to sit here and let more people die.
She places a piece of paper, and a check on Alexis’s desk.
TRUMMER
This is a list of the teachers who died. Mr. Bell was the youngest. He’d only been working 3 years…and he was engaged to be married this summer. His fiancée’s name is Sandra . They were living together at the apartment building on 400 Sunset Avenue. Room 215. Good luck.
Without another word Trummer leaves, and Alexis sits alone at her desk, lost in thought.
ALEXIS (VO)
You can run. You can hide. You can put your head between your knees and pray to god for another day. But sooner or later your past will find you. And it’ll drag you back…all the way back…to hell.
ESTABLISHING SHOT
INT.APARTMENT HALL – AFTERNOON
ALEXIS (VO)
First rule of investigation, don’t start with questions. Start with what you know. I know that it’s teachers who are dying, and that one of them had a fiancée. Now it’s time to see what she knows.
Alexis moves to knock on the door, but before her knuckle touches the door, it opens. She steps in, to find that no one had been at the door to open it. The room is dimly lit, not by natural light, or electricity, but by candles that litter the area. The apartment is covered in incense, and different symbols and statues. It has a very Asian feel.
ALEXIS
Hello? Sandra?
SANDRA, a young woman in her early twenties of Asian, or Indian decent, sits in the center of all her symbols, and candles, cross legged with her eyes closed.
SANDRA
Yes.
It was not a question. Alexis isn’t sure how to continue.
ALEXIS
My name is Al, I’m a PI, investigating your boyfriends murder.
SANDRA
Yes.
ALEXIS
Is this a bad time? Cause I can come back.
SANDRA
You called him my Boyfriend, when he was in fact my fiancé.
ALEXIS
Different strokes of the same brush.
SANDRA
Is that what you think.
ALEXIS
Just so we’re clear, I’m here to question you.
SANDRA
Yes.
ALEXIS
Okay. Um…
ALEXIS (VO)
Second rule of investigation. Motive.
ALEXIS
…Why would someone want to kill your husband?
SANDRA
That is not the question you want to ask.
ALEXIS
…yes it is…?
SANDRA
He didn’t have any vendetta’s that I knew of, nor anyone have anything against him.
ALEXIS
Well, then what can you tell me about him? Anything that could help the case?
SANDRA
He was a very haunted man, Alexis.
ALEXIS
Al.
SANDRA
He had been a haunted man for three years. I had been trying to help him with his grief. That is how we met, and got to know each other.
ALEXIS
I don’t suppose this grief had anything to do with one of his students killing a family of muggles.
SANDRA
Yes.
ALEXIS
Oh goodie.
SANDRA
Tread lightly on this case, Alexis. You have built a bubble these past few years, protecting yourself from our world. You are scared of us, but we are not the ones you should fear. The climax of your investigation threatens everything you still hold dear in your life.
ALEXIS
I find that unlikely, see…the killer only targets Wizards. Have a good day.
She leaves the apartment and strides down the hall.
ALEXIS (VO)
I don’t need a shrink. What I need is for someone to go all Eternal Sunshine on my Spotless Mind. Maybe that would stop me from always getting myself into this shit.
ESTABLISHING SHOT
INT.OFFICE – EVENING
Alexis sits in front of her computer, investigating.
ALEXIS (VO)
An investigation is like a chain. Third rule of investigations, figure out what each link in the chain has in common. Mr. Bell was one of his teachers, how likely is it that the other two taught him as well. Bingo. But he went to university for 4 years, so who was his fourth magic teacher?
She types in a command, and we see the screen that says “Fourth Year: Trummer”.
ALEXIS (VO)
Damn.
INT.UNIVERSITY – NIGHT
Trummer walks down the hallway to her office, and searches for her keys. She can’t find them, and so looks both ways before pulling out her wand and whispering…
TRUMMER
Alohamora.
The door opens, and she steps inside. Taking off her coat, she notices the coat rack so far away and gestures to it.
TRUMMER
Accio.
The rack pushes towards her, and she hangs he coat up. It is then that she notices someone sitting in her chair.
TRUMMER
Who are you? Wizard or Muggle?
The person, who was facing away from her, turns. We don’t see their face, just a gun in one hand, and ring in the other.
TRUMMER
My god, you’re the killer. Put that gun down this instant.
The person in her chair says nothing, and does nothing. Trummer points her wand towards him.
TRUMMER
Expelliarmus!
Instead of casting the spell, there is a blinding white flash and Trummer’s wand is thrown from her. She looks at it in surprise, then back to the killer.
TRUMMER
What do you want with me? How have you been able to hunt wizards? Who’s your next target?
????
Say hello to daddy for me.
Trummer tries to charge him, but doesn’t reach him in time. The man pulls the trigger, dropping Trummer to the floor. We then see his mouth as he smiles.
????
Another one down. Now we can go for the girl.
SUPERIMPOSE: To be Continued…
