A Snowboard Christmas - Chapter 6
Becka sat in the back pew of the church, tapping her heel against the kneeling pad below her. Impatiently, she picked at her nails and barely heard a word the priest at the front of the chapel spoke. Her fingers were beginning to turn a bright red.
"You're killing your nail beds," Ash, an old childhood friend, leaned over and said under her breath.
"I'm obnoxiously bored," Becka whispered back, trying not to be loud enough for the old women in front of them to hear.
"I couldn't tell," Ash laughed quietly. "You're distracted. What's up?"
"No, I'm not." Becka shook her head.
"Liar, you have that same look on your face you used to have at Sunday school when you would stare at cute little Jimmy McPhoe, who sat across from you."
"You remember him?"
"I work with him now."
"Really?"
"Yeah, we tried dating once - didn't work."
"No way!" Becka exclaimed, a little bit louder than she should have. Several people in surrounding pews looked back at her, brows raised. Nervously Becka laughed, "Praise the Lord?"
The attention faded and soon everyone was back to the service.
"So, who's it now?"
"See the priest sitting behind the pulpit?"
"No!"
"Yep."
"You slept with Father Joe?" Ash asked, brows raised in shock.
"Who said anything about sleeping with him?" Becka asked, slightly offended that Ash would immediately assume that she had.
"How long have I known you?"
"Kyle and Whit's wedding, last February."
Ash began to silently laugh, her shoulders shaking as she suppressed the giggle. Her face began to turn a bright pink as she made it so that no one could hear her.
"Stop it." Becka looked at her, appalled. Last thing she needed was the entire congregation, including the always slightly scornful eyes of Father Joe, falling upon them in the back row.
"I...can't...breathe," Ash choked quietly though laughs.
"Good. I hope you burn in hell for making a huge disruption in the middle of mass," Becka hissed under her breath. It came out a little shrewd, but Ash knew well enough what she meant.
"I'll see you there for sleeping with the clergy."
The two old biddies in front of them turned to look. The people sitting in the same pew turned to look. The group of their friends sitting four rows ahead of them turned to look. The entire service stopped as the jaw of the priest on the pulpit dropped at the comment. Apparently, Ash had forgotten the whole "be cool and quiet" aspect of the conversation, and her words had echoed through out the steeple, audible to almost all.
Becka looked horrified, her face turning a deep, deep red. She kept her mouth shut and Ash covered hers, realizing how loud she had been with her last commentary. Her shoulders however were still bobbing.
Becka sunk a little bit lower in her seat, and hesitantly the priest at the front began to continue with his sermon. Becka could hear sustained giggles from her pals sitting before her, and unwillingly she looked up to the front of the alter, where Father Joe sat, his head in his hands.
