A Snowboard Christmas - Chapter 7

"Thank you Father," an all too familiar voice said relatively close to Whitney. "It was a lovely service."

Whit looked around and saw her mother standing close to her father, shaking hands with the priest as they said their warm Christmas niceties. The service had just ended, and the large group of followers were slowly meandering out of the church, returning their candles in a box by the door and getting their final blessing of the holiday. Whitney looked over her shoulder and saw Kara standing next to Robin and watched as he poked her hard in the ribs. Kara slammed her elbow into his chest casually, not even looking up at his eyes. Smiling, Robin jabbed at her ribs again and, as expected, got the exact same response.

Whit slid her arm out of Kyle's and slowly fell behind the two. She tapped Kara on the shoulder, and then pointed in the general direction of her parents at the door. Kara's eyes enlarged, and her jaw dropped as she mouthed a profanity. Whit laughed to herself and then wiggled back up the line to Kyle, who had watched the entire affair from where he was.

"Mom! Dad!" Whit called from behind, waving. This time she actually heard Kara cuss.

"Whitney!" her mother called, waving. "We'll see you and Kyle outside."

"Okay," she smiled. She turned back to look and see Kara's reaction to the exchange, but oddly, both Kara and Robin had disappeared.

After shaking hands with the priest and giving a warm Christmas greeting to Father Joe, Kyle and Whit stood out in the lightly falling snow, and soon Whit caught sight of her parents. The two were smiling like mad, and her mother was frantically hugging some one, who she couldn't be sure. Upon closer look she saw the obnoxious pink hat of Robin, and instantly knew they had been caught.

"Whitney!" her mother shouted, catching her out of the corner of her eye. "Whitney, come look what the wind blew our way."

Standing in the falling snow with a red face, though more discolored from anger than embarrassment or joy, Kara appeared next to her father, his arm wrapped around her shoulders lovingly.

"Kara!" Whit chimed, showing false excitement. "What?"

"Yes, what are you doing home, young lady?" her father asked, not scolding but with a laugh.

"Um." Kara shrugged. "Surprise?"

"Surprise indeed." Her mother tousled her hair. "Couldn't stand being away from home for the holidays?"

Whitney laughed as Kara forced a smile and nodded regretfully. Watching her sister get due penance for trying to avoid their parents like this was probably one of the most entertaining things she had seen in a while. She could feel Kyle shaking with laughter beside her as well.

"So, you'll be joining us for dinner tomorrow," the girls' mother insisted. It was not a question but a statement.

"Of course," Kara said through gritted teeth.

"Very good then," the woman laughed. "Whitney, Kyle, have a wonderful evening."

The two parents walked off, and Whit turned to look at her sister, who suddenly turned and slammed Robin in the gut again. Robin bent over in pain, and Kara leaned close enough to whisper in his ear; and as soon as she said what she needed to, she stormed off down the cold city streets, heading back to Whit and Kyle's house.

"What on God's green Earth was that about?" Kyle asked Robin, laughing at his friend.

"Chances are he had it coming," Whit laughed. "Not to say she didn't either. Avoiding the Parents on Christmas? I'll never get that girl."

"Can't...breathe," Robin gasped, still holding his stomach. Kyle and Whit helped him over to a bench so that he could sit upright, and still clenching his gut, he deeply inhaled the cold December air surrounded him. Whit ran and got water from the trunk of the car, and when she returned, Robin was attempting to sputter words. "Waved to your parents."

Whit dropped the water bottle in laughter. "No!"

"Yeah," Robin grunted, clenching his teeth. "Why is it that she always beats me?"

"Because you're oh so beatable," Kyle laughed and hit robin rather hard on the back, an exaggerated pat that almost set Robin off.

"What did she say to you?" Whit asked picking up the bottle of water and handing it to him.

"I'd tell you, but I'm afraid I'd have to kill you." Robin took a sip. "Jesus Christ!"

"Why are you still hyperventilating," Kyle asked, the laughter stopping. "I've been slugged by Kara; she doesn't hit that hard."

"I don't know." Robin shook his head. "That one hurt."

"Let me see," Whit said, pulling aside Robin's unzipped coat and attempting to undo the buttons to his collared shirt.

"What are you doing?" Robin looked up and stopped her.

"Yes." Kyle looked at her suspiciously. "What are you doing?"

"Looking for swelling or bruising," Whit shrugged. "I have some clue about common injuries."

Robin and Kyle exchanged looks. Robin turned to Whit. "How so?"

"I'm female. We're born with these things," Whit shrugged. "Are you going to let me look at you or not?"

"I choose, not." Robin stood up and started to walk and then doubled over in pain again. "Fuck! Did she break something?"

"Doubtful." Kyle shook his head. "Robin, stop being a wimp and let us see your stomach."

"But I'm so modest!" Robin said a last futile attempt.

"Robin!" both Whit and Kyle exclaimed.

Reluctantly at best, Robin undid the buttons of his shirt, exposing his bare mid-drift. Kyle moved him closer to a street light, and Whit's eye's popped.

"Holy shit," the three said in unison as they looked at the fiery red scratch mark that dragged across Robin's stomach. The pattern was similar to that of the recoil Kara would have used when hitting Robin. The marks were deep, and, though no blood was visible, that was going to be tender for a while.

"She got you good." Kyle shook his head and traced the scratch with his eyes.

"How did that not rip my shirt?" Robin asked looking at the sides.

"How did that not rip your stomach?" Kyle stared still.

"Guys." Whit shook her head. "Kara's wearing a ring...with a rock...on her right ring finger..."

"And?" The two boys stared at her. Whit just rolled her eyes and turned back towards the car, leaving the bewildered men in the falling snow.
