Secret Life of Jonathan Greenwich - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Dad met Doc and I at the door. Doc entered first and Dad shook his hand and they hugged. Dad said, "Melissa is in the kitchen, I just want to hug my boy for about two years." He let out a chuckle as Doc disappeared into the kitchen and I soon found myself in Dad's arms being hugged. I pulled back a bit and looked at Dad with tears streaming down his eyes. I had never seen him cry. I rested my head on his chest, "I guess it's weird to see your old man cry, huh? It's just that for a while there I thought I was going to loose you." I hugged him tight. "Dad, I love you so much. I'm okay now. Really." We walked into the kitchen Mom raced over to me. It was a repeat performance of my hug with Dad. I noticed one thing -I was now taller than Mom. I guess she realized it because she commented on it, which made me feel pretty good. "Where's Peter?" I asked. "He's sleeping, dear. He only got home three or four hours ago and was exhausted." "I want to go up and lay with him until breakfast is ready." I said. "Okay dear, we'll call you when it's ready," said Mom. Although I had slept for three days I lay down in my bed and watched Peter sleeping and fell into a deep sleep. I slept for another twelve hours not waking until seven-thirty in the evening. I was alone in our bedroom. I got up and after quickly showering and stuff and got dressed. I was ravenous, but not for food. I heard Peter, Mom, Dad and Doc downstairs talking and rather than run into them I open the window and jumped out. Although it was easily a fifteen-foot drop it only seemed a very short distance. It was dark, as the sun had set much earlier. I could hear a fight going on not just two people but at least ten people. I ran to the fighting and by the time I arrived the fighting was about to begin between two gangs of teens brandishing knives and chains. One by one I drug each youth into the darkness of the shadows taking enough blood rapidly to cause them to faint. When there were only two left I walked out of the shadows ordering them to drop their weapons. "Where the fuck is everybody and who the fuck are you!" said the boy still holding a chain. "Last chance, drop your weapon," I again ordered. "Fuck..." Before he said 'you' my hand had a vice-like grip on his neck and he was standing on his tiptoes. "With a flick of my wrist I could break your neck," my fangs extended. His face showed total fear. I continued, "or before you could raise your hand to strike me I could drain the blood from your body. You have a choice drop your weapon or die. It makes no difference to me." His chain dropped to the ground. The guy he was fighting dropped his knife and I waved him over to me. He approached cautiously. "Witness," I said to the guy who had dropped his knife as I held the other boy. I sank my fangs into his carotid artery and drank a litter of his blood slowly as I watched the boy who I told to witness. The boy whose blood I was feasting on passed out and I lowered his body gently to the ground. The boys in the shadows were beginning to come to so I drug each into the light of the alley and told them to remain seated and quiet. One objected and started to get up. I grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him toward me. "Witness!" I told the rest and once again plunged my fangs into the boy's artery and drank a cupful then released him. "Gentlemen, you came here tonight to hurt, fight and even to kill each other. For what reason I do not care but from this day forward that will not happen again!" "Your body has only five liters of blood. I have taken a half to a whole liter from each of you. If there is a next time that such a fight occurs you can count on me taking another liter. I need only see you three more times and you will be dead." "From this day forward you will do at least one good deed for an elderly person and one good deed for a person present here. Fight with or hurt another in this group and you will see me again. I will feast again!" "You have been warned! Good night." "Wait!" called one boy, "Who are you?" I smiled. "They call me the Vampire Boy of New Boston," I said and then disappeared from their view. Keeping to the shadows I ran home. **** Two years had passed since that first gang fight I had stopped. It was lunchtime and Peter and I always have lunch together, which was about the only time in school that we had together. The reason for that is Peter decided on an engineering career. I opted for a medical career and because I rank the highest in school, I am now in accelerated learning classes. The only problem is I average four to five hours of homework daily, and that really cuts into the time I spend with Peter. I looked around the lunchroom for Peter, and spotting him finally, went over and sat down opposite him. "What is that?" he asked. "Uh, let me see. I think they call it a sandwich," I laughed. He rolled his eyes, "I know that dufus. How did you get a sandwich?" "I asked." "You asked?" I nodded, as my mouth was full. "And they gave you one?" "Yeah, what's the big deal?" "There are 2000 kids in this lunch period. The servers have never made a sandwich for anyone ever!" "No one ever asked. I asked," I said taking another big bite, "mmmmmm." Peter just looked at me. "What?" "You never cease to amaze me. So what kind of sandwich is it?" "Peanut butter, jelly, sardines in mustard sauce, ham, apricot preserves, cheese, squashed bananas, raw garlic, green peppers and raw onions. Oh, yeah pickles too!" "Gross! That's disgusting!" I shrugged my shoulders, "Actually it's not that bad. They call it a teach-you-not-to-ask-for-a-sandwich sandwich," I laughed, "I don't think I will ever ask for a sandwich again! Ha-ha-ha." "Hey, you two! Can I join you?" asked our friend, Everette Jones. Everette is a cutie and has a mad crush on me. He says it's because I saved his life. He tends to exaggerate. He's gay, a couple of 'blues' were picking on him, and I merely convinced them that picking on Everette could be dangerous to their health. I had connections to the Vampire Boy, and pointed out Martin, who they knew by reputation. Who is Martin? Well, remember, the boy who dropped his knife? That was Martin, and Martin took what Vampire Boy said to heart, and having dropped out of school before that fateful night, dropped back in the following day. Of course, Martin hasn't recognized me yet, because my fangs aren't extended, and I was dressed in black. Also, it was very dimly lighted in that alley. Still he has a reputation that strikes fear into the hearts of those who bully. Stories abound about his encounters with the Vampire Boy. To say the least, Everette has since never been bothered by the bullies. "Hey Ev! Sure, have a seat," said Peter. "How's our favorite artist?" I asked. "Holy shit!" Peter said in almost a whisper. Ev's eyes locked on someone behind me, "Oh my God, Jonathan! You're twin!" I turned to look, and all I saw fat boy Gary purposely knock into some boy, causing him to drop his food tray. The same way he did numerous times with me when I was eleven. In an instant I was behind Gary, and I tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and I grabbed his food tray. "Boy! Here take this!" I commanded the boy whose food had been knocked on the floor. "Yes sir," he said looking down at his feet. "Look at me." Slowly he looked up at me and for a second I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was like looking in a mirror but seeing me two years younger. We both were a bit shocked and it was only Gary voice that broke our trance. "What the fuck are you doing dreg!" said Gary angrily. I ignored him telling the boy, "You see that boy with brown hair next to the boy with red hair." He nodded, "This is your food now. Go over there and sit. I'll be there in a minute." I gave his body a slight shove to get him started. I turned to face Gary. I could see Gary's fist balling up for a strike. Then behind me I heard, "I suggest you clean up your mess, Gary." I turned to see Martin who then added, "What did I tell you about bullying?" "Fuck off, Edwards. And don't give me all that crap about a stupid vampire! You're just a pussy!" Martin rolled his eyes and smiling. "Crap huh? Pussy? Here's the deal. You meet me at the alley between Felix and Sixth. I will come there alone with no weapons except these." He held up his fists. "You bring whoever is stupid enough to back you up. And we will see if I'm talking crap, and we will see who the pussy is. You win and you are king of the mountain - you loose and for the rest of this year, and all of next year, you will do one good deed every school day for a dreg classed kid in this school, and one good deed for any kid you have ever bullied." "See you tonight," said Gary and he left. "Go join you friends, Jonathan. I'll clean up this mess." He smiled, "It's my good deed for the day." I stood there. For the last two years, I'd seen him nearly every school day, and he had never given me any indication that he recognized me until now. Why? He placed his hand on my shoulder, "I just hope I'm right. I hope Vampire Boy turns up. Now go!" Then he walked over and started cleaning up the mess on the floor. I started walking slowly. I had a problem - a big one. If I didn't show Martin would loose his life. If I did show, there was no way Gary would not recognize me. Everette coming out as gay was practically painless for him because it was no big deal. For me coming out to Peter and my parents that I was a vampire was difficult and scary and they of course loved me. Being outed as a vampire to the world could mean my death. Chapter 6 |
