Dark and dreary is the eve,
where branches whip the shutter,
as the hallowed moon takes leave.

Whispering wind does deceive
in hushed tongues, with a mutter,
dark and dreary is the eve.

The sky does solemnly grieve,
its belly moans a stutter,
as the hallowed moon takes leave.

Tangled webs nature does weave,
while its prey blows aflutter,
dark and dreary is the eve.

Oh the day is too naive,
wrapped up in mundane clutter,
as the hallowed moon takes leave.

In its one last mighty heave,
fitful, the sky does sputter,
dark and dreary is the eve,
as the hallowed moon takes leave.


** This one was a bit rough There is no specific syllable count required to this form but it has been known to have 6, 8, or 10 counts per line. I stuck it with seven just to keep the flow... and give myself a bit more work.

Whoa Bri! Villanelles scare the living shit out of me. Definitely rough to write, and you not only wrote one, but a decent one at that. Terrific work, and the effort you put in with your syllable count clearly shows. I have to agree with Lu, the last stanza is definitely my favourite as well.

Well shame on me, I didn’t even follow the syllable count when I did my own Villanelle (sad smiley), but nevertheless, it too is was a success!

And this Villanelle, Venomous Vixen is Magnificent! The imagery (always applauding), the emotions…Superlative (excellent/exceptional)!
