A song needs rhyming more than poetry does, but also, I think, it doesnt in some forms. "But then," to me does not need to be taken out because it rhmes with sins and connects it to can you explain.
To me, by saying " how many times have we," we stands for the character singing and everyone else. They abandoned him, but in reality, he also abandoned himself. On the last part it is telling to look to the sky in order to see it. Kind of like an instruction manual. Look and you'll see it, i just like the way it states it.
