A Restraining Order for Jesus

Two men enter a bare white room.
The policeman,
- just doing his duty -
closes the door with part-white fingers.
The second man,
- 33, wearing white fleece and bed-head -
gently rocks
a sleeping voice.
From a radio outside, a Billie Holiday song
climbs in through a half-closed window.
The officer removes his helmet,
hand-wrestles an itch,
settles himself
- somewhat unsuccessfully -
in one of two chairs, then speaks,
in a turquoise voice.
"Sit down Son.
Forgive the crooked chairs and defunct table.
Cuts.
You know the kind of thing.
You do know why you're here?"
In a turquoise voice of equal measure,
the handsome man replies,
"Yes I do"
The officer continues;
"You recently performed
in Blackwood High Street
the ancient 'Youth of Nain' miracle.
A Restraining Order has thus been issued
against you.
Let me read you one eye-witness account"
The officer's eyes fall
- like two plumb bobs -
to the A4 paper resting in his lap.
He begins reading aloud.
His voice, un-tuned.

Witness Statement 6th June, 2006

'On Monday, 10th May, 2006,
at around 10-00hrs I saw a man
enter Blackwood High Street.
In his mid-thirties, perhaps,
and wearing a white throw and dark sandals,
He proceeded to halt a black limousine.
The man then touched the bier
containing a clay-baked man
who subsequently sat up,
- like a garden rake under heavy foot -
and began to speak to all assembled.
For me, and many others present,
such happenings were unsettling.
Our forward looks
crashedinaheap
at the base of the bier.
Jaws and tongues broke.
Faces turned the shade of sun-dried wheat stalks.
It was bizarre'

The officer pulls
his eyes from the A4 paper.
Before him?
A bare white wall.
Upon the defunct table,
a dried human heart.
Billie Holiday has long gone.
A plexus of pains collide
in the officer's chest.
He dies

again.

Thank you both, Perscription and Lubesh. Your kind collective comments have been noted. I now intend to have both sets of comments stuffed by a most able taxidermist, and then mounted above the fireplace.

Re: A Restraining Order for Jesus

I'm interested why you did it in poem form, even though it reads like a prose?

Hello Eadha Deora and thank you for this very reasonable question. The only answer I have is to say that I felt at the time, that the poetic free form would lend more weight to the underlying philosophical proposition in the work.

What an interesting piece. Eye-catching title got me reading. As others have said, good on several levels. Nice work.

Colin, your style is like nothing I have ever seen and it is so refreshing. Every piece of yours is so unique and wonderful! The use of "turquoise voice" and "Billy Holiday" were by far my favorite parts... a color to describe a voice, how utterly brilliant. Very great piece of work here

Re: A Restraining Order for Jesus

Very good poem. Flawless in fact, from where i'm sitting. If I had to find a gripe I would say the witness statement date is pehaps a bt cliche, but I guess it fits anyway. And thats not much of a flaw. Look forward to reading more of your work.

Hi Deadman and thanks for these kind words. And let me straight away say it's good to learn you're alive and dead. I have to say, on the specific point you make, I feel obliged to agree with you now my attention has been drawn to the particular date itself. I will almost certainly get around to amending it some time soon.....

Thanks Colin

Re: A Restraining Order for Jesus

I haven't ever seen poetry written like this, but I must say it was a welcome change.
I really don't know what to say about the piece itself.... it was just amazing.
Sorry I can't say more, but it muted me. It was amazing...
