The Burg

Neath the moon, neath the heavens starred
Lost in the pines, forgotten in the glade,
Rises a tower plunged in nightshade.
The passing ages its beauty hath marred.

Crumbling, they tumble, the bricks turn to dust.
The rafters bend with time's strain
And once smooth walls are pocked with veins.
The foundations sink in moldy mire.

Echoes, mere echoes is all the burg can hear:
Fading laughter, distant wails o'er the dead,
Tremor of hearty singing, the pelting of lead,
The click of a lock, whisper of falling tears.

"What happened?" you wonder. "To this crumbling place."
"Why is it forsaken? Did misfortune strike?"
Did warriors come with cruel lance and pike?"
Why should a town be left to deface?"

My reply is one of dark mystery,
For no one knows this city's demise
Or why it here so desolate lies.
Shrouded in secrets remains its history.

Re: The Burg

I actually experiment with different styles and techniques. I don't like writing in the same way over and over (lol) so I study other acclaimed poets' rhyme schemes, devices, ect. I've really enjoyed British literature, mainly poetry. Once, when I had severe bronchitis (I missed about a month of school for that), I read all of an the Oxford Anthology of British Poetry (800 pages). I know that makes me sound like a geek, lol, but I don't care. I learned a lot, and this year, in AP English, we're studying--ta-da!--Brit-lit, and so that helped me out tremendously.
Funny thing is, I usually don't like reading poetry. I like WRITING it. . . . I'm so strange. lol

I am much the same way, I, not a huge reader of poetry I write it to clear my head because when i dont things build inside and I get stressed out. I always write in the same style though and I get tired of it. I have got to try something new.

Re: The Burg

Yeah, same here about writing when you're stressed out. It seems I write most of my poetry when I'm down in the ditch of depression. Why does there have to be a correlation between depression and sorrow with inspiration and creativity???
It's kind of funny though, that I write when I'm depressed, because I don't usually write depressing poems. Maybe poetry is my way of turning around my mood?
lol--not really. I liked your new poems though (the Good-bye one and then the one you asked me to read). Good experimenting. I'd say they were successful!
