A Letter from Elanor to Her Brother Frodo Gardner (Lord of the Rings)

Beloved, tell me,

how do you fare? I wonder where
my children are. The night is far
from being warm. I think a storm
of slush and sleet comes up to meet
my little town. And now I frown.
Where are my dears? For them I fear!
How the rain pours! Glad I'm indoors.
How the wind howls!--My stomach growls.
I think I'll make a honey cake.
Where are my--oh, here they come so-
-pping wet. Dear me! My fearless three.
Elfstan, for shame! A nasty game,
getting hom late. And Frodo, sedate
child of my own, you make me moan.
Look at you all. Now come and fol-
-low me. Sit here by the fire near.
Firiel, stop! I'll get the mop.
What a puddle you've left. Tuddle!
Fiery, get tea, yes the spice tea;
No, it's below--yes, I think so.
Elfstan, my dear, I need right here
a linen cloth. "I killed a moth!"
Good, my daughter. Yes, son, water
warps the wood floors. Over the moors?
What do you mean? Oh yes, the "Green
Dragon," he's there. Yeeesss! Pappa's there.
Ah me! The time. Hear the clock chime--
on to bed now. I'll kiss your brow
in a moment. That taper went?--
ah yes, here 'tis. I know you miss
your father. He misses you and me
too. Now goodnight. See you at Light.
I love you, dear children. The drear
storm shall soon pass. Goodnight, my lass.

Ah, back to writing. Things are fighting
to keep my hand from my pen. And
now, dear brother. I'm a mother:
children demand my working hands.
What a tiring night. Admiring
raindrops makes me--yawn--so sleepy.
I must now sleep, like the night deep.
I send my love, tender, warm love,
