Ar Calon (From the Heart)
In Welsh:
Hedd yn calon 'ch.
Nos ddofn.
Y serenau nhw'n chwalu ilawr
am y traed o y brenin coronllai.
Yr wybrennydd nhw'n lledu yn rhwth
am y golwy o y Draig-Tywysog.
Breuddwydion mewn y nos.
Hedd dwfn.
English Translation:
Peace for your heart.
Deep night.
The stars are falling down
at the feet of the crownless king.
The heavens are spreading wide
at the sight of the Dragon-Prince.
Dreams in the night.
Deep peace.
Author's Note:
Long ago, the Llywelyn princes ruled Wales, as was their right through years of honor, bravery, compassion, and justice--for the Welsh people. Their flag was a white and green field with a red dragon. They were the Dragon-Princes.
In 1283, Edward 1 (the same Edward Longshanks who could not defeat the Scots and their Braveheart William Wallace) invaded Wales and seized control. He disinherited the Llywelyn family, creating the title "Prince of Wales" for his son--and every English monarch's eldest son thereafter.
At present, the Welsh are beginning to re-awaken from centuries of English domination. Their culture is very much alive, as interest in the language and literature increases rapidly. Already, some Welsh speak of gaining independence from the United Kingdom. Perhaps, one day, the Dragon-Princes will be called upon once again to bring peace over Wales' gentle hills and lovely lands. For now, may their dreams be deep!
