Autumn is my only muse
and she’s cold,

She leaves the bed icy
as she retreats ‘ere break of day,
the sheets tangled, like a glacier
that fell and lost its way,

She’s killed off, tree by tree,
and inhaled, winding the breeze,
So that it’s doubled over,
Limbs frozen, but wheezing – colder,

and I feel myself getting older,
as my bones creak under the chill,
and I walk – walking dead,
cold, lifeless, lost in my head,
where autumn has left me-

my breath rising, like cloud,
the only evidence
that I’m still alive

Surely, not your only muse. I think you you draw muses from a well. You are amazingly resourceful at finding inspiration. Overflowing, in fact, as it seems to pour forth from you, pell mell in a hurried style that seems organic and green like life itself. It fairly blooms.

I have to say I was thinking the same thing as James, it surely is not your only inspiration. This was well done though, and you did that whole little personification you are so good at... and I saw Autumn as a woman, one you could not hold... and you trapped within her, hanging on as winter came in.

Chris, tell me, what doesn’t inspire you? This is terrific. Great personification. I loved the reference to the glacier. ‘She’s killed off tree by tree’. A common observation which we always take for granted, yet you have put it forth so beautifully. I love your rhymes. And the last part is wonderful. Powerful ending, very well executed. Love it!
