A Squirrel and a Meadowlark

A meadowlark
Atop a withered branch
And betwixt two pinecones
A squirrel.

Aroused by morning's light
The wily rodent
Watches curiously
His strange, feathered neighbor.

The keen lark
Apprehensive of its voyeur
Wriggles, hopping from branch to branch
Ready to take flight.

Both stare
In supine wonder
A squirrel and a meadowlark
Atop a withered branch.

Re: A Squirrel and a Meadowlark

I get a sense of haiku when I read this, but not quite.

Re: A Squirrel and a Meadowlark

Ooh, nice! A mini-story fit neatly into a pretty poem.

I enjoyed your use of 'fancy' words, such as 'betwixt', 'voyeur', and 'supine.' They gave the poem a professional quality.

In my opinion, this encounter is highly realistic, and gives a sense of nature and how animals interact with each other.

There are no grammatical/spelling errors that I can find, so good job on that! Overall, lovely poem; I really liked reading it.

I had to look supine up, it's nice too feel my vocabulary grow.

It's a nice little poem about a nice little story too.

Excellent use of vocabulary and a brillant voyeuristic glance into the interactions of nature. I love it.

I love the vocabulary and cuddily nature imagery! I also liked the circular flow between the first stanza and last (repeating). Dare I say, that it could be a metaphor for the cycle of life? (I'm probably just being crazy)

Thumbs up Re: A Squirrel and a Meadowlark

Marvelous vocabulary! And the imagery…Remarkable! You’ve managed the execution of so few words, but stirred so many more mental imagery. And the emotions evoked/provoked…hair chilling standing on rooted end!
