Ramadan walked into a crowded room,
opened his arms, and welcomed,
the flash of light and the resounding boom,

now, Ramadan walks the streets,
innocent, until the passerbys
avert their eyes, and whispers
plait through skyscrapers,
like a spider web
splayed across the din,

and he’s branded on every street corner,
with the flick of pupils,
to the accusing newsstands,
and the bouts of rage
that kick the empty coke cans

but really,
when flame cleansed the night,
and he opened his arms,
Ramadan was gone, within the flash
and the boom, of a blinking eye,

Now that you have given me a bit of background on this one, it is remarkable, and thought provoking. Stereotypes and Racial profiling... we saw all too much of it here, in the US, after 9-11 and even still... people confused and judging by skin color alone. Really, it projects the ignorance of a people, ones who can not distinguish different religions, races, ethnicities etc... just lump one whole part of the world and make them the enemy. Anyway, rambling (sorry ) but this one should be in a political magazine (left wing of course) it is brilliant.

This is fantastic. I agree with Bri, this should be in a political magazine. I think all of us can identify with this. Communal riots, no respect for secularism... we see it all the time, all over the world. Brilliant poem, Chris. Definitely thought-provoking.
