Northern Rock of course, is but the latest in a string of large banks / industrial concerns necessarily saved by the British state in order to minimise the negative impact that such bankruptcies might otherwise have exerted on the capitalist system as a whole. For example, when Barings Bank nearly collapsed more than a century ago, the British state stepped in to rescue it. It did likewise during the inter-war years and following World War II when many major banks were protected from collapse and many industries were protected, the latter including rail and coal. Similarly, in the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher's government stepped in to assist Johnson Matthey Bank. Countless other examples abound for all who wish to see them.
