I Am Driftwood No Longer
I Am Driftwood No Longer

Think again. "...In order to believe that this (gay marriage) threatens heterosexual marriage, you have to believe (that) it's a 'zero sum' game. If gay couples get married then, somehow, straights will not. But why not both? Why can't marriage bring us together, rather than tear us apart? The answer, alas, is that this President (U.S. President George W. Bush) has decided that it will help him, politically, to tear us apart. His base is restless over government spending and Iraq, and this is a means to placate and energize it. If that means turning a tiny minority into a lethal threat to civilization, so be it. If that minority's sole crime is to seek to live in fidelity, uphold the family, support responsibility then that, also, is beside the point. In this battle, the President has shown his true colors. He is a divider, not a uniter." -- from If at First You Don't Succeed..., an Essay by Andrew Sullivan, in the July 26th edition of TIME Magazine (Page 78). I was able to catch the light, but not from any lofty towers on any sunset bay. Because I would not have been able to see nature's rainbow prismic sight, or a clear sky, and a brighter day. Or, what a sudden lift of fog reveals, a golden gate bridge so majestic in a cloud, the beauty it protects and conceals, hiding the sun within its shroud. Where constitutional rights can be reborn, for inherently good gays and lesbians, for Madonna and Elton John, Rock Hudson and Lena Horne. Did land winds blow from wild flowers? Did land winds blow from thunder showers? I really do not know. But, one thing I am most certain. In order to enjoy a rainbow, you must be willing to pass through the rain. The colonists' gallant ships, to places like New England, once sailed. My gay and lesbian family went to San Francisco. Their self-determination never failed. Artistically creating an eden more benevolent, to carve their place in the world, to live life fully, and to find their gain. So grateful that I am gay, and driftwood no longer. Rainbow people make me proud.
