Prayer Beads

Each night I say my prayers,
no memorized lines or hail-mary's these,
but memory of a different sort,
one bead for each face, named
to the gods with a desperate
uncompromisable longing,

Each face returns to me,
the glow of hidden presence
a-light with recognition, kinship
knowing that even here, I belong,

Each bead like the heavenly spheres,
radiant, supple yet untouchable
infinitely alone in distance, save
for the light they throw together,

I am encircled by these people,
spirits with hidden pathways into each other,
secret keys for one another's depths,
and the binding chord throughout,
knotted around each single bead,
protecting the whole chain of being,
no matter where I flee, blessing
follows me, and that un-sought blessing is

Love.

Re: Prayer Beads

This is exquisitely written, and the layers of meaning lend this piece an interesting depth. The faces - are these people who have passed on, or people who have simply moved on? Either way, I like the symbolism, and I like the idea of an unbroken chain (the symbol of the beads) linking you to all of them. Interesting, too, is the thought that love might be an unsought blessing.

Beautiful, as always, Jenn, and thought-provoking too.
