Re: Hope Dies Last
I think i actually like this poem lol a couple of things arnt all that great about it like its length. I was sitting in my physics class and looked down and saw that someone had writen hope dies last on the desk and it just all came to me. Not that physics that day was all that interesting.

Re: Hope Dies Last
what is the relationship between hope and determination? i may be off but i am sensing more determination than hope in this piece...

Re: Hope Dies Last
Without hope, you can't have determination. They go hand in hand
Wonderful piece DP |

i think determination can be independent of hope, as hope is more passive and determination more active/ kinetic/ forceful... e.g. "I hope to win" vs "I am determined to win"... they seem somewhat independent to me, just my opinion. |

Re: Hope Dies Last
Not really - they are both forms of emotion, and emotions do not stand alone. You cannot have determination without some form of hope, and hope cannot be formed without some form of determination. Determination is acting upon hope.

Re: Hope Dies Last
As i have said, hope is somewhat passive and takes no action to qualify itself. Determination on the other hand is nonsensical without action, thus these two forms exhibit very different properties (as I have tried to show) and are not necessarily related. The source of determination is self-will and self-drive not necessarily an ephemeral (our of your hands/passive) hope. (again, just my opinion)

Re: Hope Dies Last
well I would say hope and determination are intertwined. You cant have determination without hope because otherwise your going on a fruitless journey. You don't just do something with determination unless you have some hope of succeeding.

i guess its a matter of perspective... e.g. "I hope to get an A on the upcoming test." (prolly wont happen if u dont study enough i.e. take action, the necessary steps) as opposed to "I am determined to get an A on the upcoming test." (implies you will work for it and are bound by hook or crook to get it) so my point all along has been that determination is based on self and active/ dynamic power, where as hope is more benign, passive, waiting for something that may or may not happen... i don't put these two things in the same basket. Wishful thinking and positive action (in my mind) are different beasts is my thinking.

Re: Hope Dies Last
I can see what you mean, that seems to certainly be the case. But I think I have a more active hope in my life. I hope for something and so I go and search for it, but of course thats not always the case.
