Good vs. Evil

Deep within us all there's a battle raging,

A struggle between right and wrong

It's a look into our lives

To figure out where we belong

Are we good, are we evil?

To the journey of self discovery we go

Searching for our essence,

Wondering if we'll ever know

Is it not subjective?

Do we not have the final say?

Or must we strive for our acceptance

From the people of the day?

Who are they to judge,

To doubt the goodness of my being

Are they so perfect that they know?

Or do they too wander without seeing?

I don't think it's possible

To know just what is right

You must live and you must learn

From experience comes insight

So when your conscience rises up

And rears its ugly head

Just remember that you're human

And will be so 'til you're dead.

Right and wrong are relative concepts....... You can only live by your own standards, and they'll have been dictated by your upbringing....

Re: Good vs. Evil

yah but what is right and wrong? Is it not all subjective......I agree lostsnail its what we are taught during upbringing and thats what makes it so strange because whats right/wrong to one may not be to the next......I just feel that our true calling in life is to make ourselves as happy as we can while also helping friends and loved ones.....So there are times when my conscience gets in the way when its really not nig enough a deal to harp on

Re: Good vs. Evil

So then are some people naturally kinder than others by nature, or is it purely nuture that shapes the person?

That is a great question.....I believe it is a mixture of the two.....some of it you are naturally born with and the rest is instilled through growing up and going through different experiences

Good work! I enjoyed this. What if your conscience is skewed and you think what you're doing is right when the rest of society sees it as evil? Is that what it is like to be insane?

Re: Good vs. Evil

Two quick points. One must never forget that conscience is a reflection of reality, the former depending on the latter. To think otherwise is to be idealist. Secondly, GOOD and EVIL are relative concepts. One must always pose the questions; Whose good? Whose evil?

Re: Good vs. Evil

I don't know, I've always thought things were more complicated than "good vs evil," and internal struggle. I don't struggle between the two, and I doubt there are many people who consciously do. It depends on the situation and circumstances. Some are naturally inclined to tend towards those things society deems bad; others take very little interests in them. How are we to define bad anyway? or even evil? I grow more averse towards that term every day; it is thrown around with so little thought, as if a naughty byword that's become cliche: the automatic go to when your thoughts fail to be profound! What makes a thing or man good, or even evil. Murder is bad, I think, but even that can be pardoned considering the circumstances. I cannot believe in the freedom of things and volition; it is more complex and involuted, adn thus I stand aside attempting to figure things out.

I guess all I can say to that would be that good and evil is a point of view so wot would they be really if good and evil is a point of view???

Indeed. Such a great feeling to have it bring up thoughts and emotions which can be discussed/argued.

Great poem, though I feel there is a comma missing from the first line, but I fear that placing on there would mess up the flow.

Love it!
